Greetings from Glen Ellen! Seven months and winter rain has brought daubs of spring green to blur the ravages of October’s fires. The scorched cars and chimneys are cleared, and neighbors are ready to rebuild. Great flocks of wild turkeys, too, are back - and a mountain lion spotted at the end of my driveway last week!

For all of you who’ve contacted me and just can’t wait until fall, a limited number of Summer Fruitcakes are now available, my annual Mother’s Day offering. Topped with signature home-grown pansies, as beautiful as they are delicious. Order now - don’t miss out!

Such great fun to watch that “OMG” look come over customer’s faces when they taste the new Shekwasha Citrus Syrup at my Farmer’s Markets! The scent of this rare Japanese citrus from the Gene Lester Collection has always been my favorite of all his 400 varieties. I have used it in my 5 Grapefruit Marmalade, and last season made a single fruit marmalade of it, but it is I think most useful as pure flavor in this syrup form.

Start by identifying notes of pineapple, lemon, tropical, floral, then realize it is simply unique, and start thinking about how you’d use it! A drizzle over fresh papaya or melon, a piece of fish, in a citrus salad dressing, a gin and tonic. Tell me what you do with it! (And look for the ineffable peels in my fruitcakes this fall…)

As new products arrive, some depart, often with an exceptional source. Just boiled off the last batch of my Calamondin Marmalade last week; the orchard has closed. Hamada Farms, long a source of some of the finest fruit at Bay Area Farmer’s Markets, has ceased selling, and with that the best Concord grapes I’ve ever had. You may think grape jellies are all the same, but not when you try my Concord Zinfandel Jelly - just 12 jars left!

As always, my best to you all,
